Product of the month (Review) – OXYGENETIX ACNE FORMULATION

Acne Foundation Bottle RGB-nbgSo I’m one of those women who seemed to get through my teenage years acne free and as soon as I arrived in my twenties, adult acne presented its very ugly face. What’s worse, is now that I am well into my thirties I would think that I could finally move on, but no…..the skin gods will hear nothing of it and I am still fighting the acne battle.

To be fair, my skin is really not that bad, but I seriously cannot remember a time when I was pimple free. There is always something brewing, erupting or festering on my skin and to be honest it can really get a lady down. Especially, that I am in the skin care industry, I can see when I speak to people about our products, they will inevitably search out my latest pimple and I can see the questioning look in their eye.

Everything seems to trigger my skin, from climate, to exercise to hormones to diet; it never stops, despite the effort that I put into fighting off these intruders. The one thing I can say is that since using Dermaceutic religiously, my skin has improved heaps, which I am very grateful for. But the product that I want to talk about today, which has taken my skin to a new level is: OXYGENETIX.Now I’m sure many of you have heard about the revolutionary breathable OXYGENETIX foundation, which in all honesty will change the life of your skin and therefore will change your life. In summary –  it is life changing. Once you’ve used OXYGENETIX you will never go back. But enough of that. What I am now talking about is OXYGENETIX Acne Formulation, which has 2% of Salicylic acid lovingly added to the original formula. The creators of OXYGENETIX are geniuses, because not only did they create a crazy, miracle product, but then they took that miracle product and improved it!!!! Yes, believe it!

Ok, so OXYGENETIX Acne Formulation is obviously designed to target and prevent acne. Although the original formulation was great for acne patients because it allows your skin to breath and does in no way form an occlusive barrier, the new Acne Formulation just takes things to a whole new level. Like the original formulation, OXYGENETIX Acne also has an Aloe Vera Barbadensis gel base and very importantly DOES NOT CONTAIN WATER (remember water attracts bacteria to the skin). Therefore, this remarkable foundation has antibacterial qualities, protects the skin and removes the dead surface cells. In addition, it is transfer and water resistant, which means it doesn’t budge, you literally can go swimming with it on and get out of the pool and it’s still there!

What the Acne formulation has that the original formulation doesn’t have – is maximum strength 2% Salicylic Acid. This combined with the breathable properties and the patented healing compound CERAVITAE and is just a power-packed, super-healing, acne-fighting, miracle foundation.

Anyway, long story short, this is a phenomenal product that has greatly helped in my war against acne. What I find most incredible is that even when I do get a tiny baby breakout, it never really turns into much and heals within a day. Aside from its acne fighting achievements, it also feels great on my skin, spreads easily, covers perfectly and leaves my skin with a lovely finish. Life-changing is all I have to say…

Product of the month – Dermaceutic Turn Over

So it’s not just good enough that I work with Dermaceutic every day, but I like to make sure that I use the products too and understand them. I believe in the products that I represent and make sure I have tried and tested everything.

What’s interesting is even with all the products available at my fingertips I still go through stages with my favourites. This is largely due to weather, lifestyle and of course when the hormones like to take their toll.

I have recently been through a rather bad stage with my skin; I got peri-oral dermatitis soon after I started running. I think it had a lot to do with change in my hormones, perspiration and also the harsh climate taking its toll on my skin.

I have been working hard at getting my skin healthy again and the product that seems to be really standing out for me is the Dermaceutic Turn Over cream. I use it every night and it has completely transformed the area where I had the dermatitis as well as the rest of my skin. It has improved the texture as well as removed the redness that the dermatitis left. Even after it had gone.

The change in my skin since adding Turn Over to my regime is phenomenal. I am honestly in love with this simple, yet highly effective product.

Turn Over cream forms part of the STIMULATING segment of the Dermaceutic home care range, it is essentially a stimulating night cream. The role of Turn Over is to essentially stimulate cellular turnover – hence the name :) By increasing the cellular Turn Over of the skin, this powerful product acts as an anti aging tool and reduces the signs of aging. The formulation is very simple and essentially contains 15% Glycolic Acid in a beautiful white, silky smooth consistency cream.

The Glycolic Acid in Turn Over is very concentrated and aids in cellular regeneration by removing dead cells that build up on the skin’s surface, therefore stimulating cellular renewal.

What I’ve loved the most about Turn Over is that it has made my skin beautifully smooth and transformed my complexion.

I am not a skin faffer, although I look after my skin, I want something that is simple, and effective. I don’t want to faff around with 5 products as a night time regime. I love Turn Over because all I have to do is cleanse at night (Dermaceutic Foamer 15), and follow it with a pump of Turn Over. In the beginning it causes your skin to seriously tingle, but who doesn’t like a good tingle to prove that your skin care is working. It applies easily and doesn’t smell.

I can highly recommend Turn Over cream, because you can honestly see the difference in your skin, within a couple of days.

What is ACNE?

Congestion and Breakouts

As many as 40% of women aged 25+ suffer from a low grade, persistent acne. Blackheads, whiteheads and pimples are common amongst South Africans, some learn to live with it, others try their best to get rid of it.

acne1

What is the difference between Acne and just a breakout?

Acne is genetic whereas breakouts can occur at any time, but is not normally persistent and is triggered either by hormones or external stimuli. Any skin type can suffer from an occasional breakout at times.

Genetically the following happens in an Acne skin:

  1. Produce thicker, stickier sebum (oil) than a normal skin due to excess male hormone, testosterone.
  2. An Acne skin produces 5 times more skin cells, but contains less Lamellar Granules which secretes enzymes to loosen the skin cells for desquamation. This condition is called Retention Hyper Keratosis (holding onto too many skin cells).
  3. With the above mentioned the follicle opening (pore) is closed off (blackhead formation) and with the lack of oxygen present the Propioni Bacterium (P-Acne) becomes active digesting certain parts of the sebum, leading to irritation and inflammation, this is now a pustule (pussy pimple).
  4. Every follicle should contain a hair to wick out the oil and dead skin cells. However in a Acne skin this is not always the case, sometimes there is no follicle in which case we call that a sebaceous follicle, or other times the follicle contains a very weak hair which cannot perform this function.

Products and ingredients to avoid when you are prone to breakouts or suffer with Acne:

Lanolin: Irritates the skin lining the follicle leading to an increase in oil production and dead cell build-up resulting in a blackhead.

Mineral Oil: Occlusive on the skin, leading to congestion (fine bumps which

are whiteheads and blackheads).

Artificial Colour: Irritates the skin lining the follicle leading to blackheads. Often women wearing orange, red and bright pinks might get blackheads on the lip line or on the cheeks where they apply their orange or pink blusher.

Invest in the following products or ingredients:

Bentonite and Kaolin Clays: Absorbs the excess oil without dehydrating the skin.

Salicylic Acid: Exfoliates the excess dead skin cells and is anti-inflammatory making it ideal for the inflamed breakouts.

Glycolic Acid: Removes the excess dead skin cells and rejuvenates the skin, preventing scar tissue as well as removing dark discolourations.

What you need to know when shopping for make-up

Oftentimes we spend huge amounts of money on excellent skincare products and aesthetic treatments, but we skimp on good quality make-up. For me the less you spend normally the worse the quality for most things in life and make-up is no exception.

History

Evidence of the use of eye make-up and aromatic ointments has been found in Egyptian tombs dating to 3500 BC. Women and men wanted to enhance their features. Today we still use make-up for the same reason, however we sometimes use it to camouflage an uneven skin colour and hide some facial flaws.  In ancient times many earth materials were used for colour, i.e. most make-up contains artificial colour which could be comedogenic (cause blackheads). A normal/ combination and dry skin type can normally deal with these colours and it seems to not irritate the skin that much, but a sensitive and acne skin will know all about these colours. A sensitive skin will sting and burn and often irritation on the skin will prevent them from using make-up at all. Whereas in an acne skin they will have blackheads appearing where  the specific product was applied. The blackheads can soon change into inflamed pussy pimples (pustules). We often call this ‘cosmetic acne’ and it may take up to 6 months to develop.

Foundation

Foundation is the last step in your skincare routine and the first step of make-up. For an acne skin a good quality foundation can make all the difference to the ‘look’ and treatment of the breakouts.

I suggest you invest in a foundation  which contains ingredients to protect the skin, i.e. SPF and vitamins. A foundation that doesn’t contain any mineral oil or lanolin as this can lead to breakouts and undersurface congestion. Often a matte foundation can dehydrate the skin leaving you skin tight and dry which only causes the skin to produce  more oil.

Again you pay for what you get and when you visit your aesthetic doctor, chances are he will have a foundation that offers you more than just colour. I have found a fantastic foundation called Oxygenetix, not only has it got an amazing range of colours including the Fitzpatrick 4,5&6 photo-types but  it offers superb coverage making it perfect for hyperpigmented skins as well as Rosacea. What is even more amazing is that it was designed to apply directly to the skin after laser, fillers, botulin toxin injections and chemical peels which makes it possible for the patient to go back to work or attend a function immediately after this procedure. Oxygenetix containsan SPF of 25 and a great combination of ingredients that heal and regenerate the skin.

Lip colour

Normally the very pink, orange and red colours could cause blackheads on the lip line. These can be removed easily by your professional skin therapist, but cleansing your lips properly can almost prevent this. Also make sure you exfoliate the lips with a gentle enzyme or AHA  exfoliator.  To make your lip colour last longer apply your foundation on the lips. The foundation will also create a barrier between the potential comedogenic lip colour and skin, preventing blackheads.

The natural nude and earthy colours are often less comedogenic, so for a sensitive, oily or acne skin this will be a better option.

pink lipstick

Blusher

Again the more intense the colour the greater the chance of comedone (blackhead) formation. The congestion or breakouts will only be in the areas where you have used the blusher not on any other areas where you did not apply the blusher. Look for ‘lighter’ colours, i.e. light pink or orange.

Eyeshadow

This area of the skin is more fragile as the skin is thinner, but due to lack of oil production in this area no breakouts or blackheads can be expected. However with this skin being so thin and drier than other areas of the skin, it could get irritated quickly. The more ‘earthy’, ‘nude’ colours will be less irritating whereas the brighter, intense colours could potentially irritate the skin. Powder eye shadows could potentially dehydrate this area leaving it dry and irritated. This can be prevented by using a good quality eye cream containing silicones which will act as a barrier.

Hygiene

Don’t share your brushes,  sponges and products with anyone else as this is not healthy for the skin and could lead to breakouts.

Wash your sponges and bushes in warm soapy water weekly, bi- weekly or monthly depending on how often you use it.

Renew your skin with Dermaceutic Cosmo Peel

The Dermaceutic Cosmo Peel changes people’s lives on a daily basis and I had the great privilege to have one of these peels. This fantastic peel removes all the ugly, damaged skin cells and stimulate new skin cells which results in a younger looking skin. The Cosmo Peel helps improve the skin by removing skin discolouration, fine lines and wrinkles.

The procedure is fairly quick and painless. Normally your medical practitioner will clean your skin and then apply the Cosmo Peel with cotton buds. At this stage you might experience heat on the skin. This peel contains an acid called TCA (Trichloracetic Acid), this acid removes the dead, damaged cells so that new ones can be produced and stimulates collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin. TCA is layer dependent which results in deeper penetration with more layers applied to your skin. This peel also comes in a variety of strengths which will have different effects on the skin.

Your medical practitioner will leave this peel on your skin and will use a fan to cool your skin as well as dry the product. Once the product has dried your medical practitioner will apply the Cosmo Peel Cream. This cream will soothe your skin on application and contains Hydroxy Acids, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and some more antioxidants. These ingredients will ensure optimum stimulation and lasting results.

It is recommended that you invest in Dermaceutic home care products to enhance the results prior and after the Cosmo Peel.

My skin looked radiant, had an improved texture, more even skin colour and felt really smooth.

Normally a course of 4 peels are recommended and performed every 2 weeks. You would normally wait 1 month after your course of treatments before you start your monthly maintenance peels.

The Cosmo Peel is recommended for Aging Skin, Dark Spots, Wrinkles, Smoker’s Complexion, Stretch Marks and Acne Scars.

C25 Cream

I use this cream every day as a moisturiser. The C25 Cream is rich in vitamins and in actual fact it contains a cocktail of 25% Vitamin C, A, B5 and E. These vitamins protects your skin against free radicals which normally lead to aging, skin discolouration and sensitivity. Your skin will feel well moisturised although this cream is very light in texture. It is also Paraben and Fragrance free.

Action of Vitamins

  • Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant, it reduces the signs of skin aging by increasing the production of collagen and minimizing the colour/ pigment production.
  • Vitamin A: It improves the structure of the skin and combats the signs of aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin texture and hyperpigmentation.
  • Vitamin B5: Reduces water loss and keeps the skin smooth and elastic due to its moisturizing properties.
  • Vitamin E: Renowned for its antioxidant properties and it combats the signs of photoaging.

The C25 Cream is the perfect travel companion providing your skin with  adequate protection and the active ingredients that can reverse any skin damage.
